Old blog, new blog
Sep 25th, 2009 by maysie

So here I am in my new blog location. I want to thank the good people at WebNetworks for hosting my old blog. They are a great group that hosts the websites of a number of fabulous non-profits, including two of my former workplaces!

But the one drawback of my old blog was the ads. The ads, I found, were based on word bots finding key words in my blogs and selecting “appropriate” ads. Yeah, that sound you hear is me banging my head on my desk.

So here in no particular order, are some random ads associated with my most recent blog postings.

Enjoy. I sure didn’t.

Adventures in Emergency Rooms: It’s Privilege Time
Sep 23rd, 2009 by maysie

Some of you may have read of my friend and colleague B’s adventure in a downtown Toronto emergency room in April of this year.

This is the story of my sweetie, R, and his adventures a few weeks ago.

What happened was R accidentally got his hand caught in the doors of those old-style freight elevators. He began bleeding profusely and called security of the building, attempted to stop the bleeding in a public washroom, passed out (!!) briefly, and was taken to the hospital which was about three blocks away.

He called me from the waiting room, and by the time I got there 30 minutes later, he was being seen. As I waited for him, I realized he wasn’t coming back out, that they were actually treating him.

Within 30 minutes?

In a downtown Toronto hospital?

Have I mentioned that sweet, lovable R is a white guy?

Peterborough Ontario: Fall 2008
Sep 20th, 2009 by maysie

This incident happened almost a year ago. I had forgotten it, and wanted to post it now, it’s an interesting story.

First, the players.

My dear friend M (Asian man, early 40s), his partner D (South Asian woman, late 30s) and their daughter who was 4 at the time, K.

Me, mixed race light skinned Asian woman early 40s, and R, my partner, big loveable white guy, late 40s. R is mostly bald and at the time had a salt and pepper moustache and goatee.

So R and I went to spend the day with M, D and K at their home in Peterborough on a sunny Saturday last fall.

D is a professor at Trent University. Why else would they move to Peterborough, home of POC whose numbers can be counted on both hands?

They live near this great farmer’s market, so our plan was to go to the market, chill out, then grab some lunch.
